Four large scale contemporary stone sculptures will be shown
May 12 - Labor Day 2006.
Royall is unique among the few stone sculptors from Maine. Not just a sculptor, he is a master stone carver, creating his personal sculptures while also running Maine Millstones located on Southport Island. Maine Millstones is noted as the last producer of granite millstones in the United States.
Royall's stone sculptures range in size from 4 feet tall to more than 9 feet. They are the personal work of a man who has been carving stone and pursuing sculpture for more that 40 years. Royall says "I am pleased with the pieces I am bringing to Pound Ridge as they represent a synthesis of my beliefs about rhythm, texture and balance in sculpture as in nature.
Critic and gallery owner Lyndsay McCandless of Jackson Hole WY describes his work as "geologic, sophisticated, and possessing a compelling natural vitality. He seems not to just carve the rock but has the unique ability to reveal the soul of the stone. They are, in an intriguing dual sense, landscape sculptures about the landscape and have an elegant presence that defines the line between garden art and fine art in the garden".
